The film — about two knights who return from the Crusades to find their homeland ruined by the Black Plague — hit cinemas on January 7, the same day as Cage’s 47th birthday.
“It’s up to the movie Gods. We’ll see what kind of a birthday present it is,” he said.
The medieval action flick sees Cage spend a lot of time on horseback as he escorts a young girl, suspected of being a witch, to a remote monastery where much of the movie’s action takes place.
“I’ve been playing a knight ever since I was a small child in the backyard. I don’t know why it took this long for me to play a knight on film, but it did and now I’ve done it,” the Oscar-winner said.
Cage recently revealed that he agreed to star in Season of the Witch because he wanted to film in a field.
“I really wanted to be in the forest,” he said. “I was making a little movie called Bad Lieutenant in New Orleans and I was very hot and I was in these tiny, very humid offices, and I was dreaming about making a movie in the forest.
“And then this script came along and there it was and I said ‘I’m going.’ And I was in the Austrian Alps, which was divine. I also found myself living a dream because I’d always wanted to play a knight. I’d been doing it since I was very small in my backyard and it took this long to put it on celluloid.”
